Side activities to generate an extra income and be as self-sufficient as possible

Shrimps, shrimps and shrimps is what you read at our website. Is there more than shrimps in the case of our affiliated Luna Shrimp Farms’ farmers? Yes there is.

Besides farming black tiger shrimps in a responsible manner, most of our affiliated farmer families have some side activities to gain an extra income and try to be as self-sufficient as possible.

The rural areas, where the farmer families live, are known for their abundant open spaces. Usually enough space to keep some animals and grow some vegetables for own purpose. And so do most of the Luna Shrimp Farms’ families do. Numerous affiliated farmers have their own vegetable or even fruit garden where they grow different kind of delicious crops and fruits. Some examples are salad, tomatoes, peppers, mango and bananas.

Some farmers keep livestock

Considering animal protein, some farmers keep poultry. They raise chicken and or duck for own consumption. The chicken or duck meat is only consumed during special occasions and eggs are eaten on a regular basis. Various farmers also sell the meat and eggs to support their families. In this case the meat and eggs are sold to the local market. Like mentioned in one of our former blogs where family Kallani Bag also has a poultry farm.

Besides poultry, there are numerous farmers who also keep cows, goats and sheep. Usually, 1 or 2 of each. Particularly for milk. Especially farmers with young children raise these animals and some of them also sell the milk to the local market. Cheese, meat and leather are not part of any consumption or selling.

Sewing and handicrafts

Regarding non-food, women usually sew to repair clothes for their own households and nearest neighbours. And for some sewing also serves as a side business, generating some extra income. Handicrafts is also something that you regularly see. A good example are mats made of long grass, called kauna grass. In one of the former blog posts you can see how such a mat looks like.

It is needless to mention that the affiliated Luna Shrimp Farms’ families are pretty entrepreneurial. If they need any help with setting up a new side activity or business, our team is there to support them.
